The cold weather is starting to look like it's thinking of turning around and leaving us in its dust, and the Sunshine making its return.

There's been dreadful amounts of illness going around Gisborne, and so many people have been unwell - us included - so I'd like to give a special thanks to those who've stayed away while sick and not come in passing on winter bugs.

Hopefully as the weather eases up, we'll see the last of these winter viruses and much healthier days ahead.

While board games are a wonderful thing to do in winter, if you ask me they're great any time of the year!

TCG Pre-orders

TCGs (trading card games) have been super hot lately. We do our best to order enough stock in to fulfill demand, but if you're really keen on a set the best way to get in on it is to place a pre-order a couple of months before release. Then we can do our best to order to fulfill demand. In store we're happy to take these pre-orders with a 20% deposit, and the rest on release and pick-up.

Some games such as Pokemon, and will always aim our product towards players first when it's extremely limited, but others we have a lot more flexibility, like Lorcana, Magic, Riftbound and Flesh and Blood. One Piece we get enough to do pre-orders in store, but will not be doing shipping or online orders.

Pokemon League

Pokemon League started up last month, and we've had a great couple of sessions. $10 entry and a booster pack for every participant is a great deal, so good excuse to come along - 4-7pm on Tuesdays!

We've got some older starter decks players can use in store, and a big bin of free bulk cards for players and kids to dig through and choose from.

Shiny new Warhammer tables

Thanks to a couple of our clever regulars, we have two fantastic new high tables primarily for playing Warhammer. These are standing height with shelves underneath and great for wargames. We've also picked up some stools to match. Thank you SO much to Andrew Stevens for building them for us, and Morganne Zim for doing the plans!

We'll use these as spillover tables when we need to, though we've gotten rid of some shelving and pulled our other two white tables out front, so we now have a seating capacity of 32 max for special card events, as well as the dedicated D&D room table. Importantly we can also run two warhammer tables when we're running another big event out front too!

We'll be varnishing & painting them soon, but they've seen plenty of games played already, and loads more in the future!

As well as all our regular monthly & weekly events - Magic the Gathering Commander & Junior League, Pokemon League, Lorcana League Riftbound Nexus Nights, Flesh and Blood Armoury Events, twice monthly paint nights & board game nights!

Call of Cthulu - this is one of the biggest worldwide RPG games you can play, but it's not quite as well-known here in New Zealand, where Dungeons & Dragons reigns supreme. I've been playing it lately with a group of friends, and I'm really enjoying it. There's not as much of a need for memorising rules as in D&D, and I love the Lovecraftian setting. I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Cthulu Mythos.

We've just put in a big restock order for Call of Cthulu books, as I noticed the shelves were a bit low, so get in soon to grab your favourite new adventure - there's heaps of books for the base 1920's setting, or try something new with Regency Cthulu or Cthulu by Gaslight. Pulp Cthulu shakes things up again, taking your party from hapless adventures to ass-kicking heroes.

This game has been a favourite on many occasions. It's not your typical board game, but it's a wonderful activity for either a solo player or a group. It appeals to non gamers, particularly women in the 50+ age range. It's very simple to learn, and very chill and peaceful. We've recently had a restock of this gorgeous game, and look forward to sharing it with many more people!

To play, you start by taking turns drawing tiles from the deck, and place them to create this beautiful pond, making sure you match the flowers to the colours on all sides. When you complete a full square, you place a flower token in the centre, of any of the four colours you've completed. Finish placing all eight flower tokens, and you've won. Your score is how many tiles left to go before you run out.
